Elling, a Portland favorite and former Blue Note artist, will be joined by sax great Emie Watts along with a string quartet and the Laurence Hobgood Trio, for the concert, Sunday, Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. at the Crystal Ballroom. With his unique collabora tion of musicians, Elling will cap the 2009 Portland Jazz Festival, celebrating the 70th Anniver sary of Blue Note Records. In his latest project, Elling has created an adventurous tribute laboration of romantic ballads only 18 months before Coltrane’s masterpiece, A Love Supreme. This will be Elling's third ap pearance at the Portland Jazz Festival having previously col laborated with Patricia Barber to the 1963 classic recording of Johnny H artm an and John Coltrane, long regarded as a true ’jazz essential.1 The rich baritone voice of Hartman, the only vo calist to ever record w ith Coltrane, formed a unique col Kurk Elling and Nancy King to sold out performances.
